Notes from a heritage bistro

Stories from our George Street dining room, from the 1828 name to the plates that shape the day.

Steak, classics and the comfort of a proper pub meal

Steak, classics and the comfort of a proper pub meal

Rump steak, scotch fillet, fish and chips, and bangers and mash keep the menu close to the Fortune of War spirit.

The photographed menu keeps the Fortune of War character front and centre with pub classics, grill dishes and plates made for a satisfying meal in The Rocks.

Guests have called out the steak and staff in public reviews, and those simple strengths guide the way we present the bistro: classic food, handled with care.

Start with coffee and eggs, return later for pub classics, grill plates and bistro mains.

Our day begins with breakfast plates like smashed avocado, eggs Benedict, ricotta pancakes, the Breakfast Burger and the Fortune of War Big Breakfast.

Later in the day, the menu turns to familiar pub classics and grill dishes, including fish and chips, chicken schnitzel, bangers and mash, steak and bistro mains.

Inside the 1828 room

Our bistro carries the Fortune of War story into a dining room shaped by The Rocks' heritage streets.

Bistro 1828 takes its name from the year Samuel Terry built the Fortune of War. Today, the bistro sits in adjoining heritage-listed spaces with high ceilings, original windows and a view toward Globe and George streets.

The room is made for an easy meal in The Rocks: full table service, an open-plan kitchen and bar, and a menu that moves from breakfast into classic bistro dining.
